1.     Cumberland is one of the 39 historic counties of England .  At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, most of the county was part of Scotland although some villages in the far southwest were included in the Yorkshire section with the Furness region.  In 1974, Cumberland was merged with the neighboring county of Westmorland to form Cumbria .
